Illegal Short-Term Rentals Can be Nightmare for Neighbors

An NBC Bay Area investigation into the illegal use of short-term rental platforms found dozens of other ads for hostel-like accommodations on websites such as Airbnb, VRBO and Craigslist. Many appeared to be in violation of the city’s short-term rental laws, which state homeowners and tenants are only permitted to rent out their primary residence and only for a maximum of 90 days a year unless the homeowner or tenant is also present. SF startup lets would-be tenants bid for apartments

A San Francisco startup is betting that would-be tenants will jump at the chance to bid against other renters in order to secure an apartment in the Bay Area's superheated rental market. Rentberry, an online price auction tool for long-term property rentals, aims to compete with Craigslist and other "Stone Age" rental services. "Essentially, we offer a more efficient and transparent application process which has the elements of bidding and an auction," said CEO Alex Lubinsky.
